Novitherm™ Heat Reflectors – FAQs

How do we save money with Heat Reflectors?
By preventing heat loss through the exterior wall, the Heat Reflector keeps the heating system hotter. The water inside the heating system returns to the boiler at a higher temperature. Therefore, you can reduce the boiler water temperature from 10°– 20° F. Reduced operating temperatures will reduce your energy costs and save you money.

What is my pay-back period?
With Heat Reflectors on all radiators, typical paybacks are in the 12 to 24 month range. Every year thereafter is pure profit.

Does the heating unit have to be removed to install the Heat Reflector?
No. The Heat Reflector fits easily onto convectors. The covers are removed and the Heat Reflector is affixed to the flat surface at the back of the convector. Convector installation requires a space of 1/3" (1 cm) or less, behind the heating fins. Heat Reflectors fit easily behind radiators provided there is a gap of 3/4" (2cm) or more.

My heating units are different sizes. Is the Heat Reflector available in different sizes?
Yes, the Heat Reflector comes in a variety of sizes. With just a pair of scissors, Heat Reflectors can be cut to fit any size of heating unit.

What is the Heat Reflector made from?
The Heat Reflector is made of a clear PVC plastic with an aluminized coating.

Will the Heat Reflector affect comfort levels?
Yes. You will find that the comfort level within your room(s) has improved. First, you will notice that the room heats up faster when the heating system is on. Secondly, you will find that there are fewer cold spots in the room because of the improved circulation of heat.

Should I install Heat Reflectors behind all heating units on interior walls as well as those on exterior walls?
Heat Reflectors are normally installed behind heating units on exterior walls only.

Does the Heat Reflector get hot?
One of the advantages of the Heat Reflector is that it does not absorb heat. Its special design reflects the heat back to the radiator and into the room while remaining cool to the touch.

How often will I have to replace the Heat Reflectors?
The Heat Reflectors can be expected to perform indefinitely.

How easy are the Heat Reflectors to install?
Very easy for the typical homeowner. Complete "Do It Yourself" instructions are supplied, and no special equipment is needed.

For multi-residential, institutional, and commercial properties, professional installation crews are available.

For properties with convectors or other enclosed heating units, we recommend that you view our (Installation Guide) and decide if you or your crew need further training or wish to have our professional crews do the installation for you.

How will the opening of windows affect savings?
With a window open, you are experiencing a greater than normal heat loss. The Heat Reflector will not change someone’s life-style or habits. However, with the Heat Reflectors in place, you will be able to reduce boiler water temperature and improve the comfort of rooms. If you had some rooms too hot and some rooms too cold, you will find now that the building 'balances' out and improved comfort in all rooms.
